WEDNESDAY:

A ROUTE OF THE KINGDOM

The central zone

For the thirth day we’ve prepared a route in the central zone of Navarra.

Navarra is settled in historic buildings and monuments, such as churches, castles and monasteries. Navarra was a great kingdom until 1512, when it was invaded by the Catholics King and Queen. Nowadays we preserve lots of wealthy cultural sites we want to share with you.

2nd STOP: OLITE

Our next stop is Olite. This town has a beautiful Palacio Real (Royal Palace), which is probably the most emblematic civil gothic building in Navarra and one of the most luxurious mediaeval castles in Europe. It was declared a National Monument in 1925. It was built in 15th century and it had a mini-zoo with lions and other animals. Attached to the castle, we can find the church of Santa María which has an amazing altarpiece.

There is another church in Olite, which is dedicated to San Pedro. Its front and cloister are Romanesque and its beautiful tower is Gothic.

Also you have to walk around this town as its streets have a medieval style and they are perfect to get lost.

1st STOP: Ujué

Lost up on the heights of a plateau with no rivers to refresh it and no trees to shelter it, seemingly intoxicated with its solitude, stands Ujué, a delightful medieval village of narrow streets that climb steeply upwards to reach, at the top, the Sanctuary-Fortress of Santa Maria de Ujué.

Located in the Central Zone, Ujué is one of the most important places of worship in Navarre and a spectacular lookout point over the Pyrenees and riverside plains.

The Sanctuary, a national monument, is one of the most important examples of medieval architecture in Navarre, and is at the centre of a beautiful legend.
