Hemingway Route

Hemingway in Pamplona:

Bar Txoko: Hemingway was photographed most on its terrace and on the Café Iruña across the square.

Hotel Quintana: One of the most emblematic places in Hemingway's visits to the Sanfermines. It closed 65 years ago. He made it famous by calling it the “Hotel Montoya”.

Café Bar Torino: Hemingway described it in his book as “Bar Milano”.

Hotel la Perla: He stayed in room number 217 (now 201) overlooking Estafeta Street and he could watch the running of the bulls in the morning.

Café Iruña: Founded in 1888. Today, the café has the same "Belle époque" atmosphere than in the 19th century. This cafe was his favorite place and made the café internationally famous.

Café Kutz: This café no longer exists.

The Nobel Prize-winning novelist Errnest Hemingway was born in 1899 in the USA. Considered one of the best writers of the 20th century. He wrote “The Sun also Rises” (Fiesta), which made the festivity of San Fermín internationally known.

Hemingway visited Pamplona nine times. Apart from Pamplona, other places in Navarre also captivated and inspired him through its scenery and tranquility. So, we can distinguish two types of routes of Hemingway. One covers certain parts of Pamplona and the other covers certain parts of Navarra.

Café Suizo (1844). It was the oldest café in Pamplona, and Hemingway mentioned it twice in his novel Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises.

Antiguo Restaurante Las Pocholas: Not many people know this establishment by Its real name, "Hostal del Rey Noble".

Hotel Yoldi: In the 1950s it became the hotel of the bullfighters because it was quiet and close to the bullring. Hemingway used to visit his bullfighter friend Antonio Ordóñez here.

Antigua Casa Marceliano: A popular bar and restaurant that is now house of municipal offices. It was a classical tavern of old Pamplona where Ernest Hemingway loved having lunch: cod in "ajoarriero" style.

Antigua pensión Eslava: Here Hemingway spent his first night in Pamplona in 1932.

Monument to Hemingway: It stands in front of the bullring, next to the entrance. Inaugurated on 6th July 1968, it is an 8,000-kilo block of granite.

Hemingway in other places in Navarra:

Auritz-Burguete: the family that owned the Hotel La Perla came from Auritz-Burguete. They persuaded Hemingway to visit this peaceful spot in the Pyrenean foothills. Hemingway would visit the village to relax, enjoy and walk or go trout fishing.

Aribe: Hemingway chose the river Irati as a place to spend long hours alone, drinking beer and hoping to catch the odd trout. He used to walk as far as the village, his favourite spot being near the Baños de Aribe.

Lekunberri: A pretty town in a beautiful natural setting that Hemingway chose in 1931 to rest.

Yesa: 1959 was the last year he visited Navarra. Life magazine took photos of him fishing on the banks of Yesa.
